Stormy Iceland Church

Dark moody skies are my favourite type of lighting, especially for the stunning landscape of Iceland. Beautiful little timber churches also look magic contrasted against the surreal green/yellow of the Icelandic landscape with jagged peaks receding into the distance behind them, especially with low clouds moving in on the tops of those peaks. Bright blue sky and sunshine is lovely, don’t get me wrong, lovely to sit in the sun and watch the world go by, but I usually leave my camera in the bag then. I’d much rather brave the cold blustery conditions and risk getting rained on to get that lovely soft diffused light you only get with dark stormy skies.
This location is right in the middle of lupine fields in the South of Iceland, its often the classic shot of the purple flowers of the lupins in the foreground on either side of the road that winds up to the lovely little white church in the background as the sun sets. Of course there are no purple flowers in August, so that shot was out and the road doesn’t look inspiring without the bright colours on both sides (it’s just a road after all), so I went for a walk to find a different perspective. None of the group thought my idea was any good, they all stayed around the road, so I was the only one who walked all the way around the church to the side for the receding mountain shot… Well, I like it…
This image is a panoramic crop from a single shot on the Hasselblad H4D-60, so there is plenty of pixel real estate.
Reykjavik Sunset
Speaking of great light, the night we all met up in the hotel restaurant in Reykjavik we got the most spectacular sunset. Half way through dinner we all ran back to our rooms and grabbed cameras to shoot this image from the balcony of the restaurant.
