East Greenland Icebergs

Last year I went to Greenland’s Scoresby Sound for the first time… and it’s taken me this long to write about it.  I think I am about 18 months behind in my processing right now, which has got to be some kind of record.  I used to complain about being stuck in the gallery all the time without any time to actually get out shooting, now I have the opposite problem, I shoot so much I don’t seem to have the time to process at all!  For example, I am writing this from a hotel (a rare night in a hotel to dry out the swag) while touring around Tasmania…  More on this later.

So last year in August I went to East Greenland from Iceland (by plane) to board a 100 year old schooner and sail around  Scoresby Sound, the worlds biggest fjord system for 8 days.  Honest, it’s my job.  That’s her, the Donna Wood, above.  Anyone familiar with sail boats will tell me that is not actually a schooner, it’ a gaff rigged ketch… but schooner sounds so much more romantic.

August is summer in Greenland, and at that time of the year the sun sets around midnight, and rises again around 2-3am, with just a long twilight in between.  This means the best thing to do is sleep all day and get up late in the afternoon, then stay up all night, because of course the best light is when the sun is low, like this…

This was shot from the boat as we cruised past on a still evening.  the evenings are almost always still in Scoresby Sound as you’re always sheltered by several hundred metre high sheer granite cliffs rising up out of the depths of the fjord on both sides.

I’m headed back to Greenland again this year to do it all again.  A little later this year, hopefully to catch some Northern Lights over the Fjords.  If you’re interested in joining me have a look HERE>>

All these images were shot hand held with the Phase One XF camera and IQ3-100 digital back.  Yes, I have gone over to the dark side, sold the Hasselblad and switched to Phase One.  Why?  That’s another post coming soon(ish).
